I went back inside and locked the door. This time, for good. The house was quiet again.

But the silence didn't feel heavy anymore. It felt clean. Like the air after a storm.

I walked over to the window. Down on the sidewalk, they were still standing there, arguing with each other. I felt the sting of disappointment, sure. I felt the weight of a failed marriage.

But beneath that, I felt solid ground. They thought I was the "easy" one. The one they could manage. The one who wouldn't push back.

But yesterday, the technician fixed the cameras.
